City Flea and Fringe and SOS ART, O (my) TR
The City Flea is the project of a couple of Cincinnati natives who have returned from stints in Chicago, Los Angeles, and most recently New York and picked up some inspiration along the way. The greatest inspiration for the City Flea came from the now famous Brooklyn Flea where our returning Cincinnati Natives would spend Saturdays strolling, eating, and browsing. They found the Brooklyn Flea to be a melting pot of wonderful collections, unique style, and interesting personalities. The Brooklyn Flea could either be a great place to spend ten minutes breezing through or three hours eating lunch, flipping through album covers, and people watching. It changes what the term “flea market” means and The City Flea hopes to do the same by offering a unique cross- section of the Cincinnati experience.
Cincy Fringe is off and running. As with other Fringe Festivals worldwide, Cincy Fringe roots trace to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, which began 51 years ago when eight groups who, not invited to perform in the larger Edinburgh Festival of the Arts, staged their own “fringe” performances. Undaunted and determined, these companies created makeshift theatres on the outskirts – or “fringe” – of the established festival. The Cincinnati Fringe Festival, produced by Know Theatre of Cincinnati, continues its eighth season this year May 31 – June 11, 2011. The Festival is a collaborative organization striving to provide opportunities and exposure to artists who are willing to take a risk. Fringe artists push the boundaries of the “norm” and continually experiment with style and content. During the festival local, regional, national and international artists inhabit Over-The-Rhine for 12 days of artistic celebration in both traditional and non-traditional spaces. These artists represent a variety of media including theatre, dance, music, poetry, visual art, film and beyond. This week & this weekend would be a great time to hang-out w/ the Fringe.
Now in its ninth year, (and it’s last weekend) SOS ART 2011 presents 10 days of paintings, sculptures, photographs, videos, installations, poetry readings, movies, music, performances and discussions on current issues of peace and justice, at Art Academy of Cincinnati.
